Miss W -->

I am not a crafty person, so it came as quite a surprise to Mr. W when I announced that I would be turning the lowercase's bathroom into an underwater paradise. It started out innocently enough. We hadn't yet painted that room and as more projects got completed, it looked worse. We had purchased some Rainbow Fish prints several years ago and those were hanging in the bathroom already, so it made sense that I would go with a fish theme. I went to Target and bought their fish kleenek cover, soap pump, toothbrush holder and a turtle tumbler. I found a Rainbow Fish inspired pastel that I did in an art class in college (Art for Elementary Teachers) and was surprised at how nice it looked. Aside of my craft deficiency, I have a general lack of skill in all things art-class related.

Once I had all the elements of the room together, it was time to pick out paint. We drove to the home improvement store where I discovered the Disney line of paints. I was enchanted by the Finding Nemo collection. And then I saw the directions to paint your own room to look just like the one in the booklet! There were Nemo wall stickers! And a url to download seaweed stencils to finish the room!

The only problem is -- I don't exactly know how to stencil. I mean, I get the general idea -- but how does one keep the paint from seeping beneath the stencil? And the website didn't exactly say what to print it on, but I'm assuming that printer paper doesn't make the best stencil. Any suggestions on how I should do this? Once the paint is dry and the pictures are hung, I promise lots of pictures! Including some shots of the lowercase using his new bathroom...er...you know...brushing teeth and splashing in the tub. We're a long way off from potty training and while a friend of mine DID take (and post) pictures of her child using the potty and *gag* the CONTENTS of the potty after...I will NEVER subject you to that!

So...you help me out with this stenciling dilemma by telling me what products to buy to do this properly and any special stenciling techniques to ensure paint goes only where I want it...you get pictures of the lowercase loving hiw new bathroom!

  Comments about my post, "":
I am doing the same thing in my boys room and would love love some advice on stenciling. Have you started the project yet? Please tell me how it's going. I'm thinking of using poster board and creating my own stencil because the one I downloaded doesn't look like the picture. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Paige in Sacramento ca

I know I'm way late to this, but I stenciled a lot in DS's room and I'm *so* not crafty. If I can do it, I know you can! I used the acrylic paints from Michael's (or any craft store). I just made sure not to use too much paint on the brush -- I bought cheapo ones so I woudln't care about damaging them with the tap-tap-tap required for stenciling. You can see my work here: http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b5da32b3127cce91637ba092b500000036108AbN27Fo0ZNc The pale green leaves on the dark green square are stencils.
